Chico, a pit bull from rural North Carolina, spent the first ten years of his life in isolation and neglect. Adopted by a family who kept him confined to a small, cluttered yard, he lacked both care and companionship.
This troubling situation caught the attention of neighbor Gricel Guerrero. She expressed her concerns to the family about Chico’s living conditions, suggesting he needed veterinary care and regular walks.
However, the owners dismissed her concerns, claiming that Chico was difficult and aggressive toward other dogs, which justified keeping him chained.

Despite feeling helpless each time she saw the dog alone, Guerrero reached a breaking point. Determined to help, she began contacting rescue organizations.
Many were either too distant or unable to assist, but eventually, Diva’s Safe Haven & Thrift agreed to take Chico in.

With new hope on the horizon, Guerrero convinced the family to relinquish the dog. They agreed, and Chico was quickly taken to his new home at the rescue center.
Thanks to Guerrero’s perseverance, Chico is now receiving much-needed medical care. He arrived at Diva’s mostly deaf, with doctors also discovering tumors and arthritis in his hind legs.

Despite these challenges, Chico is making the most of his new life, playing with staff and other dogs at Diva’s.
The staff at Diva’s have welcomed Chico warmly and describe him as a sweet-natured dog, showing resilience and affection after enduring years of neglect.
