One evening, employees at a cemetery in Missouri noticed a peculiar shadow moving through the graveyard. Instead of being frightened, they discovered that their visitor was a stray dog.
This little canine had severe hair loss and sore feet, which prompted them to contact Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) for assistance.
Donna Lochmann, SRSL’s chief life-saving officer, explained that stray dogs often find their way into the cemetery because it offers them a peaceful refuge.

“With the cemetery being so large, they find a lot of space to avoid people,” she mentioned. Recognizing the need for better care, Lochmann quickly coordinated with the cemetery staff to devise a rescue plan for the dog.
The search team spent some time looking for the stray pup before following a noise to a shrub where he was hiding.
After being gently retrieved by Lochmann, the dog, later named Kamper after a nearby tombstone, was taken to a veterinarian. He received treatment for his skin condition and sore paws.

As Kamper regained his health, the team at SRSL decided to bring him back to the cemetery to reunite him with his rescuers. “It was an emotional moment for everyone, especially for Kamper and the volunteer who called us,” Lochmann shared.
Upon seeing the cemetery staff again, Kamper was overjoyed, greeting them with enthusiastic affection. Both the dog and the employees were filled with happiness, particularly the woman who initially reached out to SRSL.
Kamper bid farewell to his friends at the cemetery, having left a lasting impression. Back at the shelter, his stay was brief, as he was soon placed with a caring foster family.

Now, Kamper enjoys playing with other dogs and receives regular medicated baths, all while wearing pajamas to protect his healing skin.
“It’s heartwarming to see Kamper transform from a frightened, sick puppy on the streets to a joyful, playful dog,” Lochmann said. “He can finally just be a puppy.”
