When a charming pug named Maple first stepped out of her crate, she wasn’t sure what to expect. After spending her formative years on a breeding farm in Iowa, life had been challenging. But now, she found herself in the caring hands of the team at Camp Companion, who were eager to welcome her to a new chapter.
Her journey took a heartwarming turn when Izzy and Tyler, her new foster parents, welcomed Maple into their home. They provided her with a safe, loving environment, allowing her to lower her guard and begin to trust humans once again.

It didn’t take long for Izzy and Tyler to realize how neglected Maple had been. “She was filthy, under-groomed, and flinched whenever we went to pet her. Puppy mills often keep dogs in overcrowded cages without proper medical care, nutrition, or playtime,” wrote her foster parents on Instagram. Despite her grim past, Maple was starting to experience much-needed safety and care.
Over the next few days, Izzy and Tyler worked tirelessly to make Maple feel at home. Their dedication paid off when Maple began requesting belly rubs and engaged with a toy for the first time.
As weeks passed, Maple slowly began to shed the remnants of her past, but it wasn’t easy. She soon became pregnant with what would be her last litter. Again, her devoted foster parents ensured she had everything she needed to carry six healthy puppies. By Christmas, while many were unwrapping presents, Maple was welcoming her own: three girls and three boys.
Maple, with the support of her foster family, raised a delightful group of puppies, who all eventually found loving homes by March.
Then came a significant change for Maple. During a post-winter walk, she seemed lighter, not just in her step but in her spirit. Shortly thereafter, she astonished everyone by displaying her first bout of ‘zoomies,’ joyfully racing around the house like a dog unburdened.
A few weeks following her transformation, a couple with a history of rescuing pugs met Maple and were instantly smitten. Her foster parents reported, “The minute we walked into the store, Maple ran right to her new mom. It was as if she knew this was her person.”
Maple, now called Mabel, immediately formed a deep connection with her new forever family. While it was bittersweet for Izzy and Tyler to part with her, they were comforted by knowing she was headed for a loving future.
