After a tumultuous night in San Antonio, staff members at the city’s Animal Care Services came to work to a surprising discovery—an unfamiliar green tarp in the parking lot.
Concerned about what lay beneath it, they approached and carefully lifted the tarp, revealing a heartbreaking sight. Underneath, they found two German Shepherds and a Chihuahua, all looking scared and disoriented.

These three dogs had been abandoned during harsh weather, left vulnerable beneath a makeshift cover. The dogs, fearful and confused, had been forsaken in the midst of a storm by those they likely trusted as family.
Lisa Norwood, who handles public relations for San Antonio Animal Care Services, shared her thoughts with The Dodo: “Whenever we encounter situations like this, it’s both saddening and frustrating. The intense thunderstorms must have only added to their fear, coupled with the traffic noise,” she explained.

Upon discovering the frightened animals, staff quickly mobilized to bring them into the shelter’s safe confines, providing warmth, food, and water.
The team named the German Shepherds Peaches and Cyrus, while the Chihuahua was called Gabby. Norwood noted that Peaches and Gabby settled in relatively quickly, but Cyrus was deeply distressed and took longer to adjust to his new environment.
The broader issue of stray animals in San Antonio remains a growing challenge, with shelters often filled beyond capacity. As highlighted on their Instagram, Animal Care Services manages an ongoing crisis involving abandoned pets, wandering animals, and overcrowded facilities.

Faced with these circumstances, the shelter acted swiftly. Peaches and Gabby soon found new homes, while Cyrus, still needing time to heal, was relocated to the German Shepherd Rescue of NY, Inc., an organization dedicated to saving German Shepherds from euthanasia.
Good news followed, as shared on the GSRNY’s Facebook page—Cyrus was adopted into a loving home as well.
These dogs, having experienced kindness and care, now have a second chance at life, and we hope they never again face such hardship.
