For Donna Lochmann, a dedicated member of Stray Rescue of St. Louis in Missouri, mornings often begin with a sense of urgency and the potential for danger. On this particular day, she embarked on her mission with her usual resolve and empathy.
“We have a dog in need of urgent medical care!” Donna exclaimed after receiving an emergency call.
Her colleague, Natalie Thompson, joined her with the same enthusiasm for rescuing animals. Little did either know that their day was about to take an unexpected turn.

As they headed toward their destination, Natalie noticed something on a nearby street and alerted Donna.
“I spotted something small and brown,” Donna informed Natalie. “It could be another dog that requires our attention.”
Despite acknowledging the sight, they decided to focus on their initial mission first. Once they had completed the medical rescue, they returned to search for the mysterious dog.
However, the puppy was nowhere to be found when they came back.

“I felt heartbroken at that moment,” Natalie later confessed. Nonetheless, she trusted her instincts and scanned the nearby alleyways.
Her perseverance paid off when she spotted movement— a thin and scared dog had run into an abandoned, towering structure.
Undeterred by the building’s dark and unstable condition, Natalie ventured inside. As she climbed the rickety stairs to the second floor, she was moved to tears by the sight before her.
Nestled in a dirty old blanket, the little dog was trying to keep warm in the chilly, decaying space she had claimed as her refuge.

Natalie reached for her slip lead, only to realize it was with the previously rescued dog in the Jeep.
“I only had one slip lead with me,” Donna explained later.
Concerned the pup might disappear, Natalie quickly returned to fetch it. But when she came back, the blanket was empty. Fortunately, she found the dog outside, sitting cautiously in an open field.
Natalie crouched down and offered some Vienna sausages, slowly gaining the dog’s trust.

Captivated by her gentle, doll-like face, Natalie named her “Dodie.” With patience and kindness, she managed to secure the leash around Dodie and led her to the safety of the Jeep.
“In many missions, this is the toughest part because some dogs are terrified. But Dodie was truly exceptional,” Natalie reflected.
At the veterinary clinic, Dodie faced each test bravely. She was underweight but otherwise in better health than expected. A special feeding plan with small, frequent meals was arranged to help her regain strength.

Dodie now enjoys the love and care she deserves in a foster home. No longer forced to curl up in a dirty blanket, she is enveloped in warmth and affection.
Her foster mom, Nicolina, along with dedicated volunteers, ensures that Dodie experiences the comfort and care she has always needed.
