When Laurie Sanchez-Guzman first heard about a small stray dog struggling to survive in a ditch, she felt compelled to help. Having worked extensively with D & A Animal Rescue in Texas, Sanchez-Guzman brought her experience and hope to the task of saving the frightened pup that other rescuers had been unable to catch.

The moment Sanchez-Guzman met the puppy in person, her heart went out to the little one. Covered in mud, with matted fur, and likely suffering from infections in her eye and ears, the dog—later named Valentina—clearly needed medical care. Despite this, Valentina was wary of humans and nervous around Sanchez-Guzman.

The moment Sanchez-Guzman met the puppy ...

To gain Valentina’s trust, Sanchez-Guzman began by keeping her distance, offering the pup treats from afar. While progress was slow, a sense of urgency pushed her to act more decisively. As time was running out, and with a storm approaching, Sanchez-Guzman made a bold move. “I was running out of time. I needed to head back to my town to get my kid from school, and also a bad storm was starting to fall. I had to do something drastic,” Sanchez-Guzman told The Dodo. Drawing Valentina close, she gently but swiftly placed her into a crate.

Initially, Valentina was wary of her new environment and didn’t trust people to come near her. Past experiences had left her skeptical, and though she needed care and grooming, she remained defensive. However, over time, Valentina began to trust her rescue family and grew particularly close to Sanchez-Guzman, who was finally able to take her for grooming and medical check-ups.

As the days passed, Valentina’s true personality began to shine. Sanchez-Guzman described her as motivated by treats and affection. “Made of pure muscle, it was a bit challenging to care for her in my home full of other fosters. But, she got into a routine and was happy when she got her one-on-one time,” said Sanchez-Guzman, recognizing Valentina as a survivor and fighter.

Sanchez-Guzman cared for Valentina for about a year, during which many people showed interest in adopting her. However, finding the right match for Valentina was not straightforward. “We knew she needed an experienced and committed adopter who understood that she was a warrior in a small and cute body,” Sanchez-Guzman said.

Eventually, the perfect family was found for Valentina. Though adjusting to new people and surroundings took time, her new family had the patience and love needed to give her a happy life. Now, Valentina is a cherished member of her family, beloved for her spirited nature and cheerful disposition.
