Dr. Nicholette Runko, who was soon on the scene at the New Jersey shelter, found Kristoff too frail to stand. With assistance from one of the technicians, she was able to examine him. Despite his weakened state, Kristoff showed affection towards his caregivers, melting their hearts with his endearing nature.

“We gave him a bath, but he was really sweet and he was just nuzzling his head into ours for pets the entire time we were looking at him,” Dr. Runko shared with GeoBeats Animals.

The medical team assessed Kristoff to be between eight and ten years old. Dr. Runko believed Kristoff might not have survived much longer outside in the harsh weather, as he was on the brink of developing pneumonia. It was unclear if Kristoff had always lived outdoors, but his stiff joints indicated prolonged exposure.

Kristoff was given antibiotics and pain relief to help with his stiffness, accompanied by nutritious meals and ample care from his caregivers. Fortuitously, his health began to improve, and he slowly regained his ability to walk.

Despite some limitations in hearing and sight, Kristoff found joy in the company of his human friends. His gentle demeanor endeared him to the shelter staff, who were deeply touched by the lack of care he had previously experienced.

Dr. Runko expressed the team’s sentiments: “We’re really happy that we were able to rescue him. Everyone here adores him and we all want, even if the rest of his life is short, we want it to be the best short life that he can imagine.”

Once his medical assessments are complete and his current owner relinquishes custody, Kristoff will begin the search for a loving forever home. The anticipation builds as everyone looks forward to seeing Kristoff enjoy his well-deserved retirement with a caring family.
