Last week, a pit bull mix named Emmy was left to fend for herself in freezing temperatures after being abandoned during a blizzard in Ecorse, Michigan.
As the snow fell and temperatures dipped below freezing, the senior dog curled up in a desperate bid to keep warm, hoping for rescue.
Thankfully, Emmy’s plight was noticed just in time; rescuers discovered her huddled in the snow. According to Lauren Boesen, a board member at P.O.E.T.

Animal Rescue, “She’d been outside for a day and a half in the severe weather,” with brutal conditions of around two degrees Fahrenheit and 30 mph winds.
P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue took charge of Emmy’s care, but her rescue was a team effort. Several organizations collaborated to get Emmy from the snowy outdoors to the medical care she needed.
Friends of River Rouge Animal Shelter first raised the alarm on social media, prompting the director of a local spay and neuter clinic, The PAWS Clinic, to transport Emmy to the Pet Care Clinic Lincoln Park for an examination.

Emmy’s condition was concerning. Boesen noted, “She was terribly malnourished,” and many feared she might not survive.
The vet found that Emmy, who is around 8 or 9 years old, was underweight, infested with fleas, and suffering from pressure ulcers on her elbows and knees. It appeared she had endured a harsh and caged existence for quite some time.
Realizing Emmy needed urgent help, the team decided to move her to an emergency veterinary center. P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue’s team sprang into action, with members dropping everything to drive her there.

During the ride, Emmy remained curled up, exhausted but hopeful.
Once at the emergency clinic, Emmy received the vital care she needed. The immediate goal was to raise her body temperature and address her wounds.
In no time, Emmy charmed the emergency vet team with Boesen recalling, “They said she just brightened up and was the loveliest girl, greeting everyone with a wagging tail.”

By Saturday morning, Emmy’s condition had improved, allowing her to join a foster family. Boesen was amazed by Emmy’s transformation, noting her cheerful demeanor as she greeted people and sought affection.
After a stop at P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue, Emmy quickly settled into her foster home, even making herself comfortable on the sofa.
Emmy, now safe and surrounded by care, is soaking up the love she always deserved. Recently, she was seen cozily lounging under a Christmas tree in matching holiday pajamas with her foster dog siblings.

Though her current home is temporary, there are hopes that Emmy will soon find a permanent family who will offer her all the love and happiness she deserves.
Boesen summed up Emmy’s spirit perfectly: “She’s absolutely the sweetest girl and deserving of the entire universe.”
