Rescuing animals can be deeply fulfilling, yet it often comes with its share of heartache. This became evident when Faith Easdale, a compassionate volunteer with Dream Fetchers in California, discovered a distressed puppy beside a bustling road. The little dog was clad in a tiny pink dress, prompting Easdale to initially think that she was waiting for her owner to return.
However, when Easdale passed by the same spot a few days later, the puppy was still there, looking forlorn. Realizing the pup had likely been abandoned, Easdale felt compelled to take action. “I thought, ‘Oh no, poor little baby, sitting and waiting.’ So I raced out there and I didn’t see her. I always panic, praying they found [a] safe haven somewhere, but I continued to search,” Easdale shared on Facebook.

With the help of a friend, Easdale began to inquire with locals about the dog. One man mentioned seeing the puppy for days, noticing that she sometimes hid in nearby bushes when frightened. Determined to find her, Easdale searched every possible hiding spot.
Easdale eventually located the pup, describing the encounter as “the saddest sight.” Carefully, Easdale and her friend set up baby gates to prevent the dog from running away, and Easdale slowly approached the frightened creature. As time passed, the pup revealed her gentle nature and eventually trusted Easdale enough to snuggle up and offer sweet kisses. Easdale then removed the dirty dress, fed her a comforting meal, and wrapped her in a cozy blanket.

Back at Easdale’s home, a soothing bubble bath awaited the puppy, along with a health check. Apart from a matted coat, the dog was otherwise healthy. Easdale looked for any signs, like a collar or microchip, that might identify an owner, but found none. “We rarely know the story. Usually, if there is an owner, they would have shown up by now,” Easdale explained to The Dodo.
The following day, the pup received a full spa treatment, transforming so dramatically that Easdale was amazed. Now named Sugar, the puppy is ready to embark on a new chapter. Easdale reflected on the rescue, likening it to a “Cinderella story,” and expressed that giving animals like Sugar a second chance is what motivates her.

Currently, Sugar is in need of a foster home where she can relax and regain her confidence. Easdale is optimistic that Sugar will soon find her forever family. Those interested in helping Sugar start her new life can reach out to Dream Fetchers for further details.
