Emerging from the woods to find safety, he astonished rescuers at a North Carolina veterinary clinic by revealing an overwhelming infestation of maggots in his eyes, ears, mouth, and open wounds.
Rufus arrived at the clinic just in time for urgent surgery. Covered with an estimated 100,000 maggots, the vet team worked diligently to treat his wounds and remove most of the infestation.
Remarkably, just two days post-rescue on May 17th, Rufus managed to stand and take a few steps. A mere 16 days later, he showed incredible progress—having completed heartworm treatment, Rufus was ready to find a new home.
He even prepped for his first laser therapy session, attempting to regain a sense of normalcy despite the scars he bears from his past.
Three months after his rescue, Rufus had transformed remarkably. His recovery not only improved his physical health but also brought new joy, especially with a newfound canine friend by his side.
His charming personality endeared him to everyone who met him.
After six months, Rufus, now a quick learner, discovered the perks of the kitchen, where he cleverly recognized faster access to food.
